Victoria is at the centre of the world’s highest concentration of killer whales. It’s perfectly situated in the middle of the southern resident killer whales’ seasonal feeding ground, and over 80 whales return year after year to feed on salmon.
During the peak season, from mid-May to the end of October, the success rate for orca sightings can be as high as 90–95%. If you factor in all species of whales—orcas, gray, humpback and minke—the success rate grows to a staggering 96–98%.
These numbers mean a lot. After all, chances are you’ve travelled a long way and you want nothing more than to finally see a whale in its natural habitat. But remember, not every whale watching company in BC has this kind of success.
