Brett Soberg received this award for being a leading environmental steward of our regional coastal ecosystem. With many local marine species at risk from climate change, pollution and over-fishing, Brett has embarked on a mission to protect our marine environment and enhance community action through eco-tourism, education and mentoring. His passion for the environment led him to co-establish Eagle Wing Tours as Canada’s first carbon-neutral whale-watching company, the founder of the Victoria Sustainable Tourism Alliance (ViSTA) and to initiate Victoria’s World Oceans Day celebration at Fisherman’s Wharf. Brett is an outstanding community leader, whose impact includes over $12,000 raised for marine conservation organizations through 1% For the Planet (in 2012), 900 pounds of waste removed from the beach around Victoria’s Inner Harbour during his last beach clean day and over 12,000 passengers per year educated through his whale-watching company.
“What this means is a total shift in how consumers purchase and, therefore, how businesses must act. A handful of companies, such as Eagle Wing Tours, are setting the bar high for other businesses.” – Jill Doucette, Founder of Synergy Enterprises & Synergy Sustainability Institute
2013 – Sustainable Tourism Business Award: Tourism Vancouver Island
Eagle Wing Tours is recognized by its peers as a tourism business in the Vancouver Island region that has set out to minimize their environmental impact, conserve natural resources, respect local cultures and benefit local communities in the past 12 months (2013). Their commitment to environmentally responsible tourism and changing the way they conduct business serves as an example to the entire industry.
“Of the many tourism industry organizations I routinely come in contact with, work with or observe, few are showing the type of commitment and real dedication to sustainability and stewardship as what I have seen with Eagle Wing Tours over the years. Their progression and transformation from a boat tour operator to a community and industry leader in sustainability and environmental stewardship has been nothing short of amazing to witness, and an example for others to follow.”
