December 16th was a special day indeed…any day where you can say you had the privilege of going out to, and on Race Rocks is a brilliant day!!

The Shaw Ocean Discovery Center chartered the boat for a special occasion. The Director Angus Mathews is moving onto future endeavors unfortunately–the Center will miss him indeed….We at Eagle Wing Tours wish you all the best.

The day was a grand one, perfect weather with flat water and sunny and slightly overcast skies. We set off shortly after 930am to Pearson College to pick up our esteemed guide Garry Fletcher, the educational director for the college. We were then promptly off to ‘the rock’. I must admit that trying to dock a fiberglass vessel next to a concrete jetty with an ocean swell was fun.

While on the rock the group from the center were escorted around the facility by Alex Fletcher, an accomplished guardian and steward of the reserve, and Garry Fletcher….loads of very interesting information: tidal pools, surge channels, Black Oyster Catchers, gulls, sea lions of varying species, old first nations burial sites, the lighthouse and surrounding buildings and of course ‘Chunk’ and almost fully grown Elephant Seal. Before to long it was time to head off….argh.

I would like to extend a very special thank you to Garry & Alex Fletcher as well as Angus Mathews from the Shaw Ocean Discovery Center :))
