Gray Whales:
Gray whales feed predominantly on prey found on the sea floor, such as small crustaceans similar to sand fleas seen on beaches. Often seen on Eagle Wing Tours whale watch adventures in the waters surrounding Victoria BC Canada, they scoop up sediment and use their baleen–thin plates which hang from upper jaws in place of teeth–to strain out their prey. Gray's perform the longest migration of any mammal as they migrate from their calving lagoons in Mexico to the Bering sea to feed. Whales stop off at Vancouver Island regularly en route and are seen on many of our whale watching adventures.
All of the photos that you see on our website were taken by Eagle Wing Tour Staff or professional photographers. All of the following photos are taken with a telephoto lens and some are also cropped in order for you to get up close and personal so you may appreciate the detailed beauty of these magnificent creatures. Eagle Wing Tours is dedicated to ethical & responsible whale watching and wildlife viewing. We, along with the PWWA, do our best to adhere to strict whale & wildlife watching regulations.

Grays always use the right side of their head for foraging along the sea floor. As a result extensive scarring is almost always present in this location.
Identifying gray whales is made easier by the fact that the animals have no dorsal fin, but instead display prominent vertebrae protrusions, or, "knuckles".
Gray whales are typically heavily marked by scarring but also colonies of microscopic sea creatures called bryozoans; tiny colonial animals that generally build stony skeletons of calcium carbonate.
Grays travel slowly, 3-5 mph and spend much time in one location "ploughing" the bottom for food.
