eagle wing tours whale watching

Interesting Links About Whales

Over the years captaining an Eagle Wing tour boat in Victoria, BC, Canada you meet many different people and have many unique experiences.  I also find that you tend to be naturally drawn to bits and pieces of information in your travels which leads you to explore further. Not only do we educate our passengers (friends) on the boat but we continue the process of sharing off of the boat.

Below you will find links to
local marine mammal and Orca conservation whale info, wildlife info, science as it relates to marine animals, organizations that dedicate their lives to helping these magnificent creatures of the deep, and a few other important links.

For all of our 'Junior Skippers' out there follow this link to a great treasure chest of learning!

Education when complimented with a genuine passion can be infectious! The Salish Sea is a very small but integral part of the Ocean's ecosystem. Lets take care of it.

Whales & Wildlife:

  •  The Whale Museum: Small but interesting museum on San Juan island sponsors many conservation efforts. Website is not to be missed for orca lovers.

  • Orca-Live: Recorded and live audio and video of the Northern Resident orca population.

  • Orca Network: A coast-wide network of supporters (including Eagle Wing Tours) send in sightings reports that are collected and dispersed via mailing list. Join for free and stay in touch with the orcas from wherever you call home!

  • Orca Lab: Dr. Paul Spong's Mid-coast benign research effort. Good conservation info and general BC coast ecosystem news.

  • BC Cetaceans sightings network: A conservation and research program of the Vancouver Aquarium, in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). They collect sightings of all cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) and sea turtles from British Columbia and surrounding waters.

  • Whale songs: Collective resource for teachers and students that includes a repository of marine mammal lesson plans for educators.

  • Reunite Luna: After the accidental death of "Luna", an orca separated from his pod, this NGO focuses on ensuring that there is a plan in place that will make certain that a future solitary orca, such as Luna, will be reunited quickly and efficiently.

  • Virtual Whales: Simon Fraser University's cutting edge use of 3D animation and web technologies in interpreting humpback whale behaviour. Amazing!

  • Life size whale: How do they fit a life size whale onto your computer monitor? Check it out!
